The combination of ion exchange and reversed-phase, specifically HILIC chemistry, can extract the chemical properties of sample mixtures, allowing for complete separation of components in complex samples or high-sensitivity detection of trace samples. However, it is impossible to retain highly polar or charged analytes using only reversed-phase chromatography. Ion exchange (IEX) chromatography alone is insufficient for separating hydrophobic compounds.
