In this seminar, we would like to consider the supply chain of the raw materials and components that make up lithium-ion batteries.
This presentation is organized in a lecture format based on the main topics of the book "Supply Chain SC for EV Batteries and Battery Materials," which is scheduled to be published by S&T Publishing in early 2022. The research and drafting of this book have been underway since around the fall of 2021, but issues related to EVs, EV batteries, and the supply chain SC of their raw materials have emerged as significant challenges. Recent information highlights a major news item from Toyota Motor Corporation's announcement on December 14, regarding 3.5 million EVs by 2030. The batteries required for this will involve a new investment of 2 trillion yen, totaling 280 GWh. Not only Toyota, but Volkswagen has also announced plans to produce 240 GWh in-house. In this presentation, I would like to focus on the first part regarding the number of EVs by 2030/35 and the second part concerning battery production expansion plans. I will estimate the supply chain of battery components, including positive and negative electrode materials, as numerically as possible, and consider examples of mineral development for nickel and cobalt. Additionally, the selection of materials such as positive and negative electrodes seems to have shifted from a focus on cost reduction for batteries to a different trend. Furthermore, I would like to touch on the emergence of the materials market for new all-solid-state batteries.

[Program] Part 1: EV Numbers and Required Battery GWh for 2030 and 2035 In Europe and the U.S., with the shift away from gasoline, there will be 18 million EVs (EU) + 13 million (China), 9 million (U.S.), and 3.5 million (Toyota) Total: 40 to 50 million vehicles Required battery capacity: 3,000 GWh Part 2: EV Battery Production Expansion Plans (Overview) In-house production in China, South Korea, and Europe The total GWh mentioned above will definitely face a shortage of raw materials. Will it be possible to start mining now and meet the demand in time? Part 3: Mass of Elemental Resources Relative to Total Battery GWh Cobalt, Nickel, Lithium, and others Part 4: Trends in the Selection of Anode and Cathode Materials and Supply Chain Unexpected continued growth of non-Cobalt materials and recycling of Cobalt-based materials *For the continuation of the program, please refer to the applications/results examples section below.
