Stainless steel oxidation coloring

Oxidation coloring refers to the process of controlling the thickness of the passive film that stainless steel inherently possesses to produce interference colors. It operates on the same principle as anodizing titanium and is sometimes referred to as electrolytic coloring. Unlike painting or plating, it does not involve applying foreign substances to the surface, so there is no concept of "peeling." (However, like regular stainless steel, it can still get scratched.) To enhance the quality of the coating, durability is improved. The coloration of stainless steel is due to the "light interference phenomenon" at the surface of the stainless steel (insulating film), where the relationship between the optical path difference of two light waves reflecting off different surfaces and their wavelengths results in the amplified wavelength color that defines the hue of the stainless steel. Note that the coloration is greatly influenced by the surface condition of the stainless steel.
