The potential of a device that integrates shapes.

As a surface-shaped device or product that can control its form according to the user's personal preferences or the scene, examples include deformable clothing, fabric products, architecture, and Virtual Reality products. The potential of "shape-integrating devices" is being explored as the next innovation that will transform daily life after the widespread adoption of smartphones. This technology is: ◆ A surface version of the piecewise constant curvature model of a curved shape manipulator (a commonly used model). ◆ Instead of specifying the positions of control points like in NURBS, it adopts a method of specifying the curvature and elongation of actuators. This is suitable for controlling robots.

basic information

Each sheet-like actuator that composes a robot expressing a highly flexible complex surface is deformed into a surface shape along a specified constant mean curvature surface. Constant mean curvature surfaces include spheres, cylindrical surfaces, catenoids (suspended surfaces), unduloids, and nodoids. Since these shape functions can be easily written, the robot's complex surface can be expressed with a minimal parameter setting.

Applications/Examples of results

It can be applied to systems that require partially different shapes rather than a uniform shape. This enhances the value of the robot. ■ Example: Support system for laparoscopic surgery ■ Main task: Design the global surgical field space inside the body (abdominal wall shape) ■ Secondary task: Locally displace organs
