The super hydrophobic film will still condense and produce water droplets, but it will not freeze for more than an hour!
In this column, I will discuss research examples on surfaces that prevent frost formation. Figure 1 shows the state of condensed water on a superhydrophobic surface observed through an electron microscope. The size of the water droplets can be as large as 100 microns. It is well known that water droplets on hydrophobic surfaces tend to form spherical shapes, as seen on lotus leaves. However, condensed water arises from the microscopic roughness of the surface, causing it to grow in a root-like manner, as shown in Figure 2, and it does not form spherical shapes like those in Figure 1. On superhydrophobic films, while condensation does lead to the formation of water droplets, they do not freeze for more than an hour. *For more details on the column, please refer to the related links.
