The materials used for sheet metal processing can be broadly divided into three categories.
Steel, represented by steel plates and stainless steel plates, non-ferrous metals represented by aluminum and copper along with their alloys, and non-metals represented by synthetic resin boards and fiber materials are included. In the "sheet metal processing industry," steel, particularly steel plates and stainless steel plates, is commonly used, so I will elaborate on those below. Iron is the most widely used material across various applications. Although it has the disadvantage of being "prone to rust" compared to stainless steel and others, this can be mitigated through surface treatments such as painting or plating. Its advantages include high material availability (easy to obtain) and low cost. Common types of iron used in sheet metal processing industries like ours include SPCC (cold-rolled steel sheet: commonly known as Migaki), SPHC (hot-rolled mild steel sheet: commonly known as pickled and black skin), SECC (electro-galvanized steel sheet: commonly known as Bond), and SS materials represented by SS400, among others.

Stainless steel is a commonly used material, second only to iron. Its applications are wide-ranging, and it is standardly used in various fields, including the food and pharmaceutical industries. The primary characteristic of stainless steel, as its name "STAINLESS STEEL" suggests, is that it is "highly resistant to rust." It also has high workability and is suitable for welding, making it a frequently used material in sheet metal processing. Typically, surface treatment involves polishing processes such as buffing, but in some cases, painting is also possible. Stainless steel can be categorized into several types, such as 304 and 430, based on the content of nickel and chromium it contains. SUS304, known as 18-8 stainless steel, contains more than 18% chromium and more than 8% nickel, making it highly resistant to corrosion; however, due to the presence of nickel, it is relatively expensive. On the other hand, SUS430, known as 13-chromium stainless steel, contains more than 13% chromium and is also resistant to corrosion, but its resistance is lower compared to SUS304. However, it is more cost-effective.

The types of stainless steel that we commonly use in our company include SUS304-2B material as well as hairline processed material, and SUS430-2B material/hairline processed material, among others. 2B and hairline are types of surface treatment for stainless steel; 2B is cold-rolled and gives a moderate gloss, while hairline has continuous polishing marks that are long and resemble hair, created with a polishing belt of about 240 grit.
