The energy consumed in the field of buildings in Japan accounts for one-third of the total and is increasing compared to other sectors. This situation necessitates further efforts towards energy conservation and decarbonization in residential and commercial buildings. With a medium-term goal set for 2030 and a long-term goal for 2050, strengthening both hard and soft aspects of residential and commercial buildings is essential for achieving a decarbonized society. This article introduces BELS (Building Energy-efficiency Labeling System), which has been operated since April 2014 as one of the third-party certifications under the guidelines for energy performance labeling of buildings based on Article 7 of the Energy Conservation Act.
