Introduction to Data Diode OWCD Supporting OPC UA
One-way communication restriction device OWCD, compatible with OPC UA.
Utilizing OPC UA in OT is progressing. We have implemented measures to prevent intrusions from IT. Let's protect our important production equipment!
One-way communication restriction device "OWCD" introduces "OPC UA communication support"! OPC UA is platform-independent, allowing for seamless integration of various information and providing high flexibility to enjoy benefits throughout the entire production process. By utilizing flags categorized by industry, even different production equipment manufacturers can obtain unified information, contributing to production DX compatibility. It is expected to continue spreading towards the standardization of industrial communication technologies. While OPC UA offers significant advantages, establishing routes that connect networks across segments without boundary restrictions can create security holes. The one-way restricted OWCD enables "OPC UA communication" that prevents intrusions across segments, starting from IT to OT. Even with the use of firewalls and switches, maintenance can be cumbersome, and mistakes can occur, with older firmware potentially failing to prevent intrusions. The OWCD "OPC UA" does not require configuration for one-way communication, making it hassle-free and reliable. In the current climate where multi-layered defense against ransomware is essential, we respond to the security needs of production equipment. There is an explanatory video at the related link below! basic information
Why is OWCD necessary even though it is a protocol with enhanced security measures? About 30% of the damage is suffered by the manufacturing industry, with an intrusion cost of 66,000 yen compared to an average recovery cost of 230 million yen. Malware infiltrates the network unnoticed, conducts reconnaissance, and leaks various information to external malicious actors. It assesses the overall situation and then launches a full-scale attack all at once. This can happen in as little as one hour! It operates on a second-by-second basis. To minimize damage, it is effective to properly limit the boundaries of communication lines that normally transmit production management information at the production line and PLC level. There is no need to connect externally to issue production management information. However, while OT is based on the premise of not being connected, IT is primarily structured on the premise of being connected, and areas handling IT communications are interconnected bidirectionally. This is where OWCD comes into play. It physically restricts the line in one direction and completely shuts out any backflow. It is used in conjunction with software that converts/decodes communications for passing through OWCD using the OPC UA protocol. OWCD "OPC-UA compatible" is unrelated to the "communication model"; it simply flows your data from right to left. We will respond to the future security needs of critical infrastructure and various production facilities.
Price information
Ransomware damage can lead to a crisis of business collapse. While "Zero Trust: Don't Trust" measures are being proposed, OWCD physically restricts circuits in one direction, making it perfectly aligned with Zero Trust, free from configuration errors. For those considering digital transformation, it's essential to implement security measures on the network beforehand, as costs will increase later. Recovery alone averages 230 million yen, not including ransom payments... A little extra effort and ingenuity are important. Please use the "Contact Us" link above.

Applications/Examples of results
In industrial networks, you can use OT⇒IT data integration. It can be applied anywhere where communication can be strictly segmented and limited to one direction. We have many applications in such environments. For customers who are still unsure about OPC UA, please feel free to consult us regarding future communication protocol changes. Just between us, if your PLC is not the latest or your receiving server does not support OPC, we also offer a "File Secure Link" that collects and distributes files such as CSV, JSON, and binary. We will support protocol conversion as well. We also provide engineering services regarding application methods, including network design. Conversely, for customers who are stuck in a "communication model" and cannot even conduct a PoC, we are here to help. OWCD does not adhere to a "communication model," but we can discuss how to proceed. OWCD is also adopted by government agencies, transportation systems such as railways and airports, and research laboratories. It serves as a physical safeguard to protect the core of multi-layered defense. Please reach out through the "Contact Us" link above.
