In OPC UA, clients and servers use X.509 certificates to authenticate each other during OPC UA communication. If all devices possess certificates and trust each other's certificates, secure communication can be reliably established using the TLS implementation included in the OPC UA server and client. The challenge lies in equipping OPC UA servers and clients with certificates and keys and integrating them into the OPC UA process to build a PKI. The situation is complicated by the fact that keys are stored in the file systems of each device without protection. The CodeMeter CmDongle includes a secure storage element that is ideal for key storage. CodeMeter technology is integrated into the OPC UA server and client to access these keys hidden in the CmDongle via OPC UA.
