The international standard ISO 17463 describes the measurement of the corrosion properties of high-impedance organic protective coatings on metals. This is done by utilizing the Accelerated Cyclic Electrochemistry (ACE) technique. For more details on the ISO 17463 standard, please refer to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This technique employs a cycle consisting of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements, cathodic polarization, and potential relaxation. Cathodic polarization is applied due to the degradation of the coating, while EIS and potential relaxation monitor the coating and changes in its properties. The ACE technique is used to evaluate the permeability of the coating.

This application note demonstrates the compliance of the Metrohm Autolab PGSTAT M204 and flat cell with the ISO 17463 standard. The coating on the metal substrate was analyzed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, followed by cathodic polarization, relaxation time, and cycling formed with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. From the plot of potential versus relaxation time and the Bode plot, it is possible to monitor the aging of the coating and evaluate its characteristics.
