Nitrate ions (NO₃⁻) are reduced to nitrite ions (NO₂⁻) under alkaline conditions. The resulting nitrite ions are then measured through a diazotization reaction. It should be noted that this measurement method assumes that there are no nitrite ions originally present in the sample.
