It is possible to selectively and simultaneously measure hydroxide ions and carbonate ions in the same sample.
This method measures the concentrations of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻), and carbonate (CO₃²⁻) using a neutralization reaction with standardized hydrochloric acid solution. Phenolphthalein indicates the endpoint of hydroxide ion neutralization, changing color from pink to colorless. Methyl orange indicates the complete neutralization of bicarbonate and carbonate, changing color from yellow to red. Based on the volume of titrant consumed at each endpoint, the concentrations of sodium hydroxide and carbonate are calculated with high accuracy and reproducibility.
