A case study showcasing how a real-time “count-up” display of satellite operating time helps communicate the appeal and value of environmental research.
Digital signage from Seiko Time Creation has been installed in the Center for Global Environmental Research at the National Institute for Environmental Studies in Tsukuba, Ibaraki. The institute uses the signage to provide visitors with information such as the operating time of the GOSAT series of satellites, local times in cities around the world, and observational data. A distinctive “count-up” display updates the elapsed time since each satellite was launched every second. By visualizing how long the satellites have continued operating without interruption, the display helps communicate the value of long-term satellite observation and the significance of the institute’s research. Case Study Overview ■ Installation Location: Entrance hall of the Center for Global Environmental Research ■ Challenge: Because the satellites are in space and the observational data cannot be seen directly, finding an effective way to communicate the institute’s research activities was a key challenge ■ Reason for Selection: Prompt and attentive support, along with an effective proposal to present the satellite operating time through a distinctive “count-up” display Search Keywords Digital signage, information display system, research facility signage, research institute signage, facility guidance system, information distribution system, operational performance display, count-up display, real-time display, operating time display, operational record display, visualization, data visualization, satellite operation information display
