Due to the amendment of the hot spring law resulting from the gas explosion at a hot spring facility in Shibuya Ward, it has become mandatory to properly process combustible natural gas (methane gas) and obtain permission from the prefectural governor by the end of March 2010 in order to draw and utilize hot spring water. Even those who applied for hot spring extraction permits by the end of March 2009 must apply for a change of hot spring extraction permit to the prefectural governor and obtain approval for the change before carrying out construction for gas processing equipment, if they plan to utilize transitional measures for existing facilities and install gas processing equipment by the end of March 2010. However, the high cost and large space requirements of conventional gas separators have been obstacles to their introduction.
