It is possible to perform shot peening treatment on both small and large items in mass production!

Shot peening refers to the process of impacting a surface with small steel particles (shot) using a rounded hammering action (peening). It originated in the 19th century when steel plates were strengthened by hammering, and it has been widely applied to vehicle leaf springs and similar components. By projecting hard steel balls onto the surface of heat-treated products (such as quenching and carburizing), the surface undergoes work hardening, resulting in high residual compressive stress. The improvement in residual compressive stress enhances durability and resistance to fatigue failure. Additionally, it helps improve surface irregularities and prevent hydrogen embrittlement. While the methodology is similar, it is important to distinguish shot peening from shot blasting or sandblasting, which are aimed at removing surface contaminants. "Shot peening" is a treatment primarily applied to the surface of steel, aimed at achieving work hardening through plastic deformation, uniform surface stress, and the introduction of residual compressive stress. Specifically, it involves projecting a media (small steel balls mainly referred to as steel shot or steel beads) onto the workpiece by means of air pressure or mechanical force. The speed of the projected steel balls ranges from 40 to several hundred m/s, and their size is approximately 0.05 mm to several mm. A deep hardened layer is obtained by projecting larger steel balls at high speeds, while a shallow hard layer is achieved by projecting smaller steel balls at fast speeds.
