The Kumamoto Red Cross Hospital, which strengthened the piping joints with the black rust conversion effect of the red rust prevention device "NMR Pipe Protector," completely prevented water leaks during the Kumamoto earthquake.

Kumamoto Red Cross Hospital, being a long-established medical institution, faced issues due to the aging of its facilities. One of the significant problems that cannot be ignored is the "deterioration of pipes due to red rust." One of the issues caused by the deterioration of the air conditioning hot and cold water pipes is "leakage." In advanced medical facilities, leakage can lead to the malfunction of medical equipment and is certainly undesirable from a hygiene perspective. In response, in 2014, the 'NMR Pipe Protector' was introduced as a measure to prevent pipe deterioration, and its effectiveness was recognized, leading to its implementation throughout the entire facility. A water quality survey conducted before the installation of the NMR Pipe Protector revealed that the iron content due to red rust in the hospital's air conditioning hot water was 12.3 mg per liter, indicating significant red rust presence. However, just two weeks after the installation of the NMR Pipe Protector, this level decreased to 0.07 mg, demonstrating a reduction of approximately 82% in concentration, and proving that the red rust had transformed into insoluble black rust in the water. The "Lions Mansion Koshigaya North" in Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture, introduced the NMR Pipe Protector in November 2010, successfully reducing the cost of pipe maintenance to one-third of the amount originally planned for lining work in the long-term repair plan. Before the installation of the NMR Pipe Protector, and one year, five years, and ten years after installation, the rate of red rust blockage at the dissimilar metal joints, where red rust deterioration progresses the most, was continuously inspected, confirming that the rate of red rust blockage decreased over time. This indicates that the red rust is gradually transforming into black rust, which is one-tenth of its original volume. This has proven that the water supply pipes can be extended to the lifespan of the building. The management association effectively utilized the saved budget for projects such as converting lighting fixtures to LED. In addition to the LED conversion of lighting, the renewal of elevators is also being considered in the future. As a result, the NMR Pipe Protector has become a savior for the condominium. The NMR Pipe Protector has been widely adopted as a device for preventing red rust in piping and extending the lifespan of pipes, and it has recently gained attention in water distribution pipes of water supply agencies. At the Japan Water Works Association's water research presentation held in 2013, the Yokohama City Water Bureau published a paper reporting the results of a demonstration experiment showing that the use of this product can suppress the decrease in chlorine concentration in tap water. This matter was also reported as an article in the Japan Water News. The initial verification confirmed the reduction of iron ion levels in the water and the increase in residual chlorine concentration before and after installation in the water supply pipe within the Tsurumi water reservoir's associated housing. Next, a comparison of residual chlorine concentrations was conducted, revealing that before installation, the chlorine concentration was 0.5 PPM in the test pipe located 10 meters from the main pipe, 0.3 PPM at 60 meters, and 0.2 PPM at 135 meters, indicating that the residual chlorine concentration decreased with increasing distance due to red rust in the piping. After the installation of the NMR Pipe Protector, it was confirmed that the chlorine concentration at 135 meters doubled. The management company proposed updating the piping with stainless steel pipes as a measure against water supply pipe deterioration; however, due to the repayment of loans from exterior wall repair work and insufficient reserve funds, it was difficult for the management association to proceed with the pipe replacement. The management association approved the introduction of the NMR Pipe Protector at the general meeting because it came with a guarantee that stated, "If it does not work, we will refund you." To objectively evaluate the red rust prevention effect of the red rust prevention device "NMR Pipe Protector," quantitative effect measurement is conducted. As the red rust gradually transforms into black rust with a volume reduction of 1/10 due to the NMR Pipe Protector, the Palace Tsurumi conducted an investigation of the red rust blockage rate using an endoscope at two locations in the seventh year after installation, showing a reduction in blockage rates of 35.3% and 17.4% compared to before installation. At the Legend Hotel Saigon (now Lotte Hotel Saigon) in Vietnam, severe red water emerged from the water supply pipes just six years after its construction. Despite running the water for an extended period, there was no sign of improvement, leaving guests unable to even take showers. The water in Vietnam contains a high level of sulfate components, which reacts with galvanized steel pipes (SGP), making it very prone to red rust formation. In response, in 2008, a red rust prevention device called the "NMR Pipe Protector" was installed in the water supply piping. Before the installation, red water was coming from all the water taps in the hotel. However, about a month and a half later, after conducting water quality checks in the sinks, baths, and toilets of ten guest rooms on the 14th to 17th floors, it was found that the water supply in almost all rooms had become clear, confirming the effectiveness of the red rust prevention. The corrosion of red rust in the water supply pipes was halted, and it was successfully transformed into black rust. The Kagurazaka campus of Tokyo University of Science was 26 years old at the time. The water supply pipes were made of PVC-lined steel pipes, and serious red rust blockages had occurred at the joints of the water supply pipes. Before the installation of the NMR Pipe Protector, an inspection of the red rust blockage rate in the toilet water supply piping revealed that the blockage rate was 35%, indicating significant red rust deterioration. The results showed that the red rust blockage rate had decreased to 31%, and it was verified that the red rust was gradually changing from a volume of 1/10 of black rust from the surface of the red rust. At the Nihon University College of Engineering campus in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, the water supply pipes in several research buildings were significantly deteriorated due to red rust, resulting in red water coming from the taps on holidays and the following days. The water quality was remarkably restored to a hygienically satisfactory level. Blow discs are inexpensive equipment, so we can install many to eliminate any issues! For hoppers with a diameter of approximately 1400 to 2000φ, it is common to install a total of eight discs in two tiers of four each, as shown in the reference diagram below. This time, due to a high risk of blockage just above the discharge section, we installed two of the lower four discs at a position 150 mm lower.
