[AM Utilization Case] Component Development: Phase 01
Verify the minimum thickness that can withstand the post-process (grinding pressure) with the goal of lightweighting precision rolls!
As an application of additive manufacturing (AM) for precision roll components, we will introduce our efforts towards weight reduction and improved cooling efficiency, divided into four phases. This time, we created seven types of precision rolls with three different wall thicknesses, adding internal ribs to two of them, as well as a double tube and a weld verification feature. Despite various challenges, we determined that there is potential for weight reduction and manufacturing at a cost level comparable to the current situation for the application of AM in precision rolls, and we decided to proceed to the next phase. [Case Summary] - Created seven types of precision rolls with three different wall thicknesses, adding internal ribs to two of them, as well as a double tube and a weld verification feature. - A wall thickness of 2.15 mm yielded good results, including the polishing process. - From the circumferential wall thickness distribution, it was found that the rigidity of the internal ribs is insufficient. - From the height-wise wall thickness distribution, significant distortion is occurring due to large changes in cross-sectional area between the inclined and cylindrical sections. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.*
