- This is an experiential seminar on the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and its solver, PyroSim. - FDS uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD), making its approach applicable to fires of various scales, from stoves to oil storage tanks. It can also be applied to problems that do not involve fires, such as building ventilation. - In this seminar, along with the experiential session, we will also introduce the foundation with the cooperation of the Public Interest Incorporated Foundation for the Promotion of Computational Science, and there will be a tour of the FOCUS supercomputer and the K computer.

[Analysis Case] Cogging Torque Analysis of Claw Pole Motors

The subject of analysis is a claw pole motor.

The claw pole motor is divided into the rotor and stator parts, each having a structure as shown in the figure. By incorporating the magnetization of the permanent magnets determined through pre-magnetization analysis, the rotor is rotated in an unloaded state to perform torque analysis. Although this is an analysis involving rotation, it can be conducted without regenerating the air mesh of the gap (the space between the rotor and stator) by using PHOTON's uniquely developed new slide interface. We would like to introduce a case study of the all-in-one CAE platform "DEP MeshWorks" that our company handles, implemented by major automotive manufacturers in North America. The customer was interested in our solution to achieve the challenge of reducing the weight of an SUV while maintaining performance targets by using parameterization of thickness and shape. The main method we proposed was a Design of Experiments (DOE) based multi-domain optimization/design exploration using "DEP MeshWorks" and CAD morphing. The multi-domain optimization/design exploration method based on parameterization using MeshWorks successfully reduced the weight by approximately 12% while meeting all performance targets. We would like to introduce a case study of the all-in-one CAE platform "DEP MeshWorks" that our company handles, implemented by a major automobile manufacturer. They faced the challenge of reducing the weight of the existing SUV product line (a significant amount achievable during manufacturing) without compromising performance, with minimal packaging and component changes. To address this, we conducted a three-phase approach consisting of baseline evaluation, parameterization using MeshWorks, and optimization.
