Tohoku University Technology: Target Tracking Technology Using X-ray Image Analysis: T18-003

Organ tracking made possible with X-ray image processing!

In radiation therapy, there is a demand for image (video) processing technology that enables real-time tracking of tumors (affected areas) that change in position and shape due to patient breathing, allowing for the delivery of therapeutic radiation. While markerless image processing technology that avoids the need for inserting metal markers for tracking the affected area and mitigates the risk of side effects is being developed (related literature [1][2]), challenges remain in identifying the position and shape of tumors when the amount of tumor movement is small or when the affected area moves over high-back organs such as bones. This invention utilizes a mathematical model to estimate foreground/background luminance values that cannot be observed in X-ray images (fluoroscopic images) by using virtual foreground/background luminance values and internal states created from 4DCT data obtained during treatment planning, resolving the indeterminate state and extracting (separating) the foreground/background luminance values.
