[Case Study] Comparison of Ion Sources in Qualitative Analysis of Odorous Components

Comparison of AEI Ion Source and General Ion Sources

Odor analysis is an important analytical theme that is widely conducted not only in food but also in exhaust from equipment, the atmosphere, and the construction field. Among these unpleasant-smelling compounds that humans find distasteful, many have low olfactory thresholds. Technological advancements related to measurement, such as methods for collecting odor compounds, separation in gas chromatography, and the development of detectors, have been rapidly progressing to improve performance. In this context, improvements to ion sources in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) have also been made as part of efforts to enhance sensitivity, with reports indicating sensitivity improvements of more than ten times compared to conventional types in recent years. This application note presents the results of an investigation into how the Advanced EI (AEI) ion source, which has improved sensitivity compared to the standard ion source (Thermo Scientific ExtractaBrite ion source), can provide advantages in qualitative analysis, using geosmin, one of the compounds responsible for unpleasant odors, as an example.

[Case Study] Direct Introduction Probe - Rapid Identification and Confirmation of Unknown Substances

Identification of unknown substances using the Exactive GC Orbitrap mass spectrometer.

The detection and identification of illegal substances or suspicious materials of unknown origin is difficult, often involving complex analytical processes, which can take time to yield final results. Furthermore, high reliability, confirmed by many points, is essential for final identification. Generally, all suspicious substances seized by law enforcement agencies must be sent to scientific investigation agencies for testing. Drug testing kits can be used for the identification of certain classes of drugs, but identifying the exact active substances in unknown powders or liquids, especially new substances in drugs like "legal highs," is often challenging. When using mass spectrometry, high mass accuracy data is essential to gain the necessary selectivity in complex matrices and enhance the reliability of compound identification. By measuring the molecular weight of chemical substances with sufficient accuracy, analysts can determine the elemental composition and identify the chemical structure of substances using isotope ratios and fragmentation patterns. This application note describes a method for reliably identifying unknown substances almost instantaneously. This method connects a direct insertion probe (DIP) to the mass spectrometer and rapidly identifies compounds using both electron ionization (EI) and chemical ionization (CI).

[Case Study] High-Precision PAH Quantification in Edible Oils Using High-Resolution GCMS

Achieving accurate and highly sensitive quantification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using high-resolution GC-MS.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are components generated from the heating of organic materials, and due to concerns about their carcinogenicity and other health effects, PAHs present in food are regulated in some countries and regions. In particular, edible oils may undergo heating as a pretreatment during extraction from raw materials, which raises the possibility that PAHs could be generated during the thermal processing, even if the raw materials themselves do not contain PAHs. Since various countries have established standard values for PAHs, safety inspections may be required when exporting food abroad. These standard values are becoming stricter year by year, and high-sensitivity detection measurement devices are needed to accurately quantify these standard values. This application note presents a case of highly sensitive quantification of PAHs without interference from matrix components, achieved using the high mass resolution and mass accuracy of the Orbitrap GC-M system, a high-resolution GCMS. Data acquisition is performed through full scan measurements, making method development easier and enabling retrospective analysis (such as checking whether newly regulated components were present in previously measured samples).

I have summarized the challenges and solutions for nitrosamine analysis.

Reliable detection and quantification of nitrosamines and mutagenic impurities.

Due to the presence of unacceptable levels of mutagenic nitrosamine impurities, several pharmaceuticals have recently been recalled. To accurately detect and quantify trace amounts of mutagenic impurities in pharmaceuticals, Agilent offers relevant GC/MS, LC/MS, and high-throughput MS-based analytical techniques. <Challenges in Nitrosamine Analysis> 1. Introducing mass spectrometers requires meeting regulatory requirements, which can be cumbersome. 2. There are many target substances, making it difficult to choose which method/device to use for GC/MS or LC/MS. 3. Due to the high cost of the equipment, results that justify the expense are expected (in terms of cost, operation, speed from introduction to startup, and decisions on outsourcing). 4. It is challenging to foresee whether the risk assessment can be completed by the deadline. <Solutions for Nitrosamine Analysis> Agilent's application guide provides various validated methods from sample preparation to measurement analysis, enabling quick setup and support from introduction to operation. Additionally, regulatory compliance, including data integrity, is achievable.

Component Analysis: GC-MS Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer

Introducing a new device! We present an analytical method aimed at the qualitative and quantitative analysis of components contained in samples.

We have introduced the "GC-MS Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer" manufactured by Shimadzu Corporation. This is one of the analytical methods aimed at qualitative and quantitative analysis of components contained in samples, used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of volatile organic compounds such as parts, materials, residual solvents, and additives. It is necessary for the measurement target to be gasified (with a boiling point below 300°C), but it is suitable for component analysis of mixtures due to its higher sensitivity compared to IR and RAMAN, as well as the ability to separate components in the GC section. 【Overview of GC-MS Equipment】 ■ GC-MS Main Unit: GC-2030, GCMS-QP2020 NX ■ Headspace Sampler: HS-20 ■ Pyrolysis Analyzer: Multi-Shot Pyrolyzer Py-3030 ■ Specifications ・Detection Limit: Several ppm (varies depending on the measurement target) ・Headspace: 40–300°C, Sample Size 13mm x 40mm or smaller ・Pyrolysis Analyzer: 50–1050°C (EGA measurement compatible), Sample Size up to 4mm *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

[Data] Analysis of Additive Defects in Polymers Using Thermal Desorption GC-MS

It is possible to analyze with good sensitivity using thermal desorption GC-MS analysis! We propose methods tailored to the symptoms of issues and objectives.

Various additives are used in polymers to improve stability and processability; however, due to environmental impact and long-term storage, additive components may precipitate on the polymer surface, or the additives themselves may undergo chemical changes, leading to discoloration and degradation. This document presents examples of analyzing the bleed-out of additives and the chemical changes of additive components due to UV irradiation using thermal desorption GC-MS. Although additive components are present in only small amounts compared to the main polymer components, they can be analyzed sensitively using thermal desorption GC-MS. We propose methods tailored to specific issues or objectives, such as predicting product degradation in combination with reliability testing, thermal analysis, and main component analysis. Please feel free to contact us. [Contents] ■ Analysis of additive components bled out from nitrile rubber ■ Analysis of additive components in nylon 66 subjected to UV irradiation *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.
