Problems such as “spoilage and odor generation of sizing starch solution in storage tanks” and “bacterial counts exceeding 1,000 cfu/ml several times a year (especially in summer)” had been reported. Because starch solutions are neutral and prone to spoilage, a faster-acting preservative was required compared to conventional products. Therefore, Statect 231 was shock-dosed 36 times per day at high frequency.
