It is possible to evaluate the luminescent properties and degradation analysis of perovskite solar cells non-destructively.

Perovskite solar cells are expected to be the next generation of solar cells due to their lightweight and flexible characteristics. They contain organic structures, halogens, and metals, and the variations in their composition and crystallinity lead to changes in their properties, which is considered one of the challenges in the research and development of perovskite solar cells. In this study, we evaluated the differences in photoluminescence (PL) spectra and luminescence lifetimes between the normal and abnormal areas of perovskite solar cells subjected to high-temperature and high-humidity testing using PL measurement and fluorescence lifetime measurement devices.

Thin-film solar cells using SnS (tin sulfide) offer the following advantages: ・Free of toxic elements such as Cd and Te. ・Composed of abundant and inexpensive elements (Sn and S). ・Efficient light absorption at a thickness of just 2–3 μm (compared to ~500 μm for silicon). ・A conversion efficiency of 25.3% has been reported for homo p-n junctions. However, achieving high-efficiency SnS solar cells with a homo p-n junction requires n-type SnS thin films, which have been technically challenging to fabricate. In this invention, inventor successfully synthesized n-type SnS thin films for the first time using a novel sulfurization technique based on sulfur plasma. This breakthrough is expected to enable the realization of homojunction SnS solar cells in the future.

High-efficiency solar cells made from environmentally friendly nitride semiconductors.

The nitride semiconductor InGaAlN can almost cover the entire solar spectrum, and its constituent elements are also environmentally friendly. Unlike conventional semiconductors, nitride semiconductors do not have lattice-matched substrates, resulting in many defects within the crystal. In solar cells, it is necessary to efficiently extract photo carriers. As a strategy, a device structure that utilizes the spontaneously generated polarization electric field within the crystal has been proposed. To realize this structure, it is essential to have growth technology that controls the polarity of the crystal (the arrangement order of constituent atoms along the thin film crystal growth direction), particularly nitrogen (N) polarity growth technology. Tohoku University has successfully achieved this N-polar growth earlier than anyone else in the world and has fabricated N-polar solar cells. Experimental verification has shown that the extraction efficiency of photo carriers is more than eight times greater compared to Ga-polar solar cells.

High-performance perovskite solar cells fabricated at high speed and low temperature.

High performance, self-organization, passivation, solution process, anti-solvent free, high durability, surface free energy, p-i bulk film formation.

Perovskite refers to a type of crystal structure composed of halogen elements such as lead or tin combined with iodine or bromine, along with organic alkyl ammonium ions. The perovskite structure is used as the light-absorbing layer in perovskite solar cells. The perovskite layer, which can be formed easily and at low temperatures through a solution process, has a thickness of 0.3 μm, which is about 1/500th the thickness of single and multicrystalline silicon solar cells that typically range from 150 to 200 μm, making it resource-efficient. By utilizing the electrostatic interactions between poly-electrolytes and nanoparticles, as well as self-assembled monolayers of phosphoric compounds, it becomes possible to fabricate high-performance perovskite solar cells quickly and easily on textured transparent conductive films at low temperatures. Additionally, by adding fluorine-based materials with low surface free energy to the perovskite precursor and simply applying and heating it, the materials can spontaneously segregate to the perovskite surface, allowing for passivation of the perovskite surface. This leads to enhanced performance of the solar cells and promises improved durability.
