Fine structure analysis | TEM/STEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy Analysis)

Nano to angstrom resolution! Observation of fine morphology and composition analysis at the atomic level.

TEM/STEM is an analytical method that uses an electron beam to image samples. The spatial resolution of TEM/STEM is approximately 1 to 2 Å. High-energy electrons (80 to 200 keV) can penetrate electron-transparent samples (up to about 100 nm thick). While the spatial resolution of TEM/STEM is superior to that of SEM, it often requires complex sample preparation. Additionally, in recent years, the introduction of AC-STEM (STEM with spherical aberration-corrected lenses) has enabled higher resolution analysis compared to conventional STEM. EAG Laboratories owns more than 20 TEM/STEM instruments and over 30 FIB-SEM systems for sample preparation. We also have multiple EDS/EELS systems for elemental analysis. With a sufficient number of facilities for analysis, we can always respond to TEM/STEM analysis requests with short turnaround times (standard delivery: 6 to 8 business days / expedited delivery: upon inquiry).

Reproducibility of SIMS analysis data

It is possible to evaluate the amount of impurities with high reproducibility.

In the manufacturing of semiconductor devices, the control of impurities such as dopants is a crucial process. When focusing on ion implantation, even slight differences can affect quality and performance, making precise control necessary. The high reproducibility of SIMS analysis is ideal for the development and maintenance of these processes.

[Analysis Case] Component Analysis of Food Wrap Film Surface

Analysis of the compositional changes on the surface of the wrap film before and after heating using TOF-SIMS.

We analyzed the surface components of three types of commercially available food wrap films (A, B, C) using TOF-SIMS. In this document, we focused on the outermost surface of the wrap films, as shown in Figure 1.

[Analysis Case] Evaluation of the Composition of Secondary Battery Electrolyte

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of various components contained in the electrolyte.

In the electrolyte of lithium-ion secondary batteries, a combination of high dielectric constant solvents and low viscosity solvents is used to improve electrical conductivity. Additionally, additives and electrolytes (supporting salts) not only facilitate the transport of Li ions but also have the function of forming a film on the electrode surface, requiring various performance characteristics. This paper presents examples of qualitative and quantitative analysis of various components such as solvents, electrolytes, and additives by evaluating the electrolyte itself using ICP-MS, volatile components during electrolyte heating using GC/MS, and the dry residue of the electrolyte using TOF-SIMS.

【Did You Know】Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme <Enzyme Work Series>

Substances involved in blood pressure increase! Here are some trivia about ACE.

Angiotensin I and Angiotensin II are molecules involved in blood pressure regulation. ACE2 is known as a recognition protein for the novel coronavirus, but this time, we will share some trivia about ACE. Blood pressure regulation is one of the important functions in the body, and angiotensin-converting enzyme is a substance involved in the rise of blood pressure. We will introduce the mechanism of blood pressure elevation, focusing on angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), while showing the structures of related substrate compounds. *For detailed content of the article, you can view it through the related links and catalog. [Analysis Case] Evaluation of Resistance Values and Li Distribution in Secondary Battery Cathodes

Distribution of resistance values in the electrode cross-section, visualization of conduction paths, and comparison with ion distribution.

The charge and discharge characteristics of lithium-ion secondary batteries are influenced by electronic conductivity. I will introduce a case where the decreased conductivity of active materials, due to degradation or blockage of conduction paths, was visualized as a resistance value distribution using SSRM. By comparing the results obtained from SSRM with the elemental distribution of Li and other elements measured by TOF-SIMS, it is possible to confirm the correlation between resistance values and elemental distribution. Additionally, it is feasible to classify conductive additives and binders based on resistance values, perform statistical processing, and quantify the mixing degree for each material.

[Analysis Case] Measurement of Partial Density of States of GaN

Information about valence bands and gap states can be obtained by element.

Soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (SXES) using synchrotron radiation is widely used as a method to evaluate the electronic states of materials, as it allows for the direct acquisition of the partial density of states (pDOS) near the Fermi level for each element constituting the material. Furthermore, the characteristics of this method include: 1. Information from the bulk can be obtained. 2. It can be evaluated without being affected by charging effects, even for insulators. 3. The detection limit is low (<1 atomic%). These features make it particularly effective for evaluating materials containing light elements (such as B, C, N, O). In this document, we will introduce the SXES spectrum of a GaN substrate as a measurement example.

[Analysis Case] Mechanical Property Evaluation Simulation Using Molecular Dynamics Calculations

It is possible to analyze the deformation behavior of nanomaterials in response to environmental changes (pressure and temperature).

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are lightweight and possess excellent mechanical properties (high strength and high elasticity), making them suitable for various applications and environments. In particular, the deformation behavior of CNTs is related to flexibility and energy absorption characteristics, which are important in sensor and nano-device design. This document presents a case study that simulates the bending and recovery deformation of single-walled CNTs using molecular dynamics calculations. The simulation allows for the observation of structural changes at the atomic level due to environmental changes (pressure and temperature), enabling the analysis of deformation behavior based on the changes in strain energy associated with these structural changes.

FE-SEM/EDS-Raman analysis

A new proposal that is the first in the industry! A Raman detector has been added to the FE-SEM!

Traditionally, elemental analysis using an EDS detector during FE-SEM observation was common. Our company has transformed the conventional EDS detector into a windowless EDS, allowing for high-sensitivity analysis from Li to U. Additionally, with the inclusion of a Raman detector, it has become possible to obtain information on different compound forms from organic to inorganic.

Analysis of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitory Activity

We will determine the activity of inhibitors against ACE using 3HB-GGG (peptide) as the ACE substrate with the WST method!

We would like to introduce our "Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibition Activity Analysis." Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II, which has blood pressure-raising effects, while simultaneously breaking down bradykinin, which has blood pressure-lowering effects. This enzyme is involved in the increase of blood pressure within the body. In recent years, ACE inhibition activity measurement has been conducted in processed foods such as agricultural products and fermented foods, as well as in beverages. Depending on the nature and purpose of the samples, we will propose suitable pretreatment methods. [Characteristics of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme] - It converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II, which has blood pressure-raising effects, while simultaneously breaking down bradykinin, which has blood pressure-lowering effects, thus playing a role in the increase of blood pressure within the body. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.
