Backlash refers to the intentional gap created between gears. If there is no gap between the gears, the transmission of rotational motion becomes poor, and further wear between the gears can lead to their deterioration. In other words, the presence of this backlash allows the gears to perform rotational motion smoothly. However, it is not enough for this backlash to simply exist; it is important that it is of an appropriate size. - In the case of spur gears and helical gears: For spur gears and helical gears, backlash refers to the gap or play on the pitch circle of a pair of meshing gears. The size of this backlash can be determined according to the JIS accuracy grade. The sum of the minimum values calculated from the face module (size of the gear) and the pitch circle diameter of a pair of gears is defined as the minimum backlash, while the sum of the maximum values is defined as the maximum backlash. The strength design of gears, like the design of general machinery, is carried out with the aim of preventing damage, and among various designs, strength design occupies a particularly important position. The strength design for gears is mainly conducted regarding: - Bending strength of the teeth - Surface pressure strength of the teeth - Scoring strength of the tooth surface against seizure. There are many types of gear damage, but they can be broadly classified into two categories: tooth breakage and surface damage. Common examples of tooth breakage include fatigue breakage and overload breakage. Fatigue breakage occurs when a load is repeatedly applied that generates bending stress exceeding the material's fatigue limit at the root of the tooth, leading to cracks that initiate from the root fillet and propagate, causing tooth breakage. Overload breakage occurs when an extremely large overload acts on the tooth, resulting in breakage due to one or a few repetitions of slight loads. As for surface damage... [Case Study] Correcting tooth shape and pitch errors to resolve gear noise issues.

Introducing a case study of high-precision machining of gears that led to improvements in noise reduction!

We would like to introduce a technical proposal case that achieved quality improvement and noise reduction for gears from other manufacturers that were generating noise. The customer reported that noise occurred while using gears from another company, but that company was unable to resolve the noise issue. As a result of our measurement investigation, it was determined that the cause of the noise was due to poor tooth profile error and pitch error. We proposed remanufacturing the gears with corrected tooth profile and pitch errors, and delivered them.
