At Meinetsu, we have traditionally utilized salt baths to perform heat treatments that enhance the functionality of steel materials. By researching and applying this technology in-house, we have succeeded in creating unique color expressions. This technique utilizes the oxide film formed by heat treatment on stainless steel, and since each piece is done by hand, the resulting products feature distinctive patterns with a mix of various colors. Due to the manual coloring process, there is a high degree of freedom in shape and application, making it suitable for a variety of uses. The oboro color is achieved with SUS304, resulting in a finish characterized by blue. ■ Number of Pieces and Colors: - Approximately 200 sheets of about 400×120 were used and adhered to one wall. - SUS304 - oboro The color appears differently depending on the angle of light, allowing for various expressions. Gas soft nitriding treatment is a heat treatment that forms carbonitrides on the surface by heating and holding in a mixed atmosphere, allowing nitrogen and carbon to diffuse into the surface. It features excellent wear resistance, less distortion compared to quenching, and surface hardness equivalent to that achieved during quenching, with a quicker finishing time. By hardening relatively inexpensive materials, it is also possible to achieve the same hardness as more expensive materials. Additionally, while the basic finishing characteristics such as hardness remain unchanged between "salt bath soft nitriding" and "gas soft nitriding," gas soft nitriding results in a cleaner appearance after treatment, leading to fewer processing steps and faster completion. [Content] The heat treatment was changed from oil quenching to salt quenching, resulting in improved wear resistance and durability. The hardness increased from HRC 40-45 to HRC 55-60.

This is a case study that succeeded in extending the lifespan by changing the heat treatment method of S55C to "salt quenching." [Consultation Details] The S55C shaft was being hardened using vacuum oil quenching, but hardness could not be secured. [Solution Case] We proposed changing to salt quenching, which has good heat transfer, and upon performing the quenching, we were able to secure the hardness. Additionally, the salt quenching eliminated uneven hardening and resulted in a fine hardened structure, contributing to the extended lifespan of the product.

This is an introduction to a case where changing the heat treatment of leaf springs to "salt quenching" successfully reduced distortion. 【Consultation Details】 We want to perform quenching on leaf springs that cannot be corrected for distortion, aiming for minimal distortion. 【Solution Case】 We proposed changing the quenching method from oil quenching to the less-distorting "salt quenching." We succeeded in reducing the distortion after quenching.

This is a case study on successfully reducing distortion and shortening delivery times by changing the heat treatment method for long shafts to "salt quenching (salt bath quenching)." 【Consultation Details】 The long shafts that underwent gas carburizing heat treatment exhibited significant distortion, leading to increased heat treatment delivery times, costs, and post-processing efforts, prompting a need for a solution. 【Solution Case】 A proposal was made to switch to heat treatment and cooling using a salt bath. The characteristics of the salt bath allow for uniform quenching with minimal distortion, resulting in a reduction in the number of polishing finishing processes and consequently shortening the delivery time.

This is a case study regarding a request for heat treatment "salt quenching" for SK material prototypes. 【Consultation Details】 We want to achieve a hardness of HRC50 or higher, but if we perform salt quenching with the material as is, issues with precision and distortion arise. 【Solution Case】 We proposed changing the material from SK to SPCC and altering the heat treatment method to gas nitriding. This not only achieved a hardness of HRC50 or higher, but also reduced the total cost of mass-produced items and improved the lifespan of the molds. Gas soft nitriding treatment is a heat treatment process that maintains a temperature range of 550 to 600°C in a mixed atmosphere of carburizing gas and NH3 (ammonia), allowing nitrogen and carbon to diffuse into the surface to form carbonitrides and achieve surface hardening. The Unizoff method generates this mixed atmosphere through the thermal decomposition gas of urea, creating a consistently stable environment. Compared to salt bath heat treatment, it does not use cyanide salts, making it an environmentally friendly heat treatment method that contributes to pollution prevention. Various set methods can be chosen according to the product, such as direct placement on fixtures, hanging, or alignment. "Salt bath heat treatment" is a heat treatment method where a salt bath made primarily from potassium chloride and sodium chloride is heated to high temperatures, and products are immersed in it for quenching and tempering. Compared to conventional gas methods, it offers a uniform finish with minimal distortion, and because the treatment is conducted in an open furnace, it can accommodate a wide range of products from mass-produced items to single pieces. At Meinetsu, the focus is primarily on neutral salt bath quenching and carburizing quenching, but there are plans to expand into quenching of high-speed steel (HSS).
