At Meinetsu, we have traditionally utilized salt baths to perform heat treatments that enhance the functionality of steel materials. By researching and applying this technology in-house, we have succeeded in creating unique color expressions. This technique utilizes the oxide film formed by heat treatment on stainless steel, and since each piece is done by hand, the resulting products feature distinctive patterns with a mix of various colors. Due to the manual coloring process, there is a high degree of freedom in shape and application, making it suitable for a variety of uses. The oboro color is achieved with SUS304, resulting in a finish characterized by blue. ■ Number of Pieces and Colors: - Approximately 200 sheets of about 400×120 were used and adhered to one wall. - SUS304 - oboro The color appears differently depending on the angle of light, allowing for various expressions. Free membership registrationGas soft nitriding treatment is a heat treatment that forms carbonitrides on the surface by heating and holding in a mixed atmosphere, allowing nitrogen and carbon to diffuse into the surface. It features excellent wear resistance, less distortion compared to quenching, and surface hardness equivalent to that achieved during quenching, with a quicker finishing time. By hardening relatively inexpensive materials, it is also possible to achieve the same hardness as more expensive materials. Additionally, while the basic finishing characteristics such as hardness remain unchanged between "salt bath soft nitriding" and "gas soft nitriding," gas soft nitriding results in a cleaner appearance after treatment, leading to fewer processing steps and faster completion. [Consultation Details] The S55C shaft was being hardened using vacuum oil quenching, but hardness could not be secured. [Solution Case] We proposed changing to salt quenching, which has good heat transfer, and upon performing the quenching, we were able to secure the hardness. Additionally, the salt quenching eliminated uneven hardening and resulted in a fine hardened structure, contributing to the extended lifespan of the product.
