I will count the number of coils in the photo of the compression spring. The number of lines = the number of circles = 5, therefore the number of coils = 5, but it is important to note that this is not the case. In the case of springs, one complete turn is counted as one coil. If you start counting from the left end, it will be one coil at the red circle. The star-marked area is still less than one coil, approximately 0.5 coils. The number of coils in this spring = 4 coils. By the way, the one coil at both ends is in contact with the adjacent coil and is called a "seat coil." The role of the seat coil is to improve stability when standing, and the seat coil itself does not function as a spring. The number of coils excluding the seat coils, which effectively work as a spring, is called the effective number of coils. This spring has an effective number of coils = 2 coils, total number of coils = 4 coils. If you have any questions or concerns about springs, please feel free to consult us. Our technical staff will respond carefully. Technical Contact: Ujiie Phone: 0235-22-0407 FAX: 0235-22-0546 Email: web@tohj.com Tsuruoka Spring Co., Ltd. We also support web conferences.

Free membership registrationThe representative hook shapes of tension springs are the reverse round hook and the round hook. The reverse round hook is in the foreground of the photo, while the round hook is in the background. The reverse round hook is designed to be pinched at the center before being raised (indicated by the arrow), which means the spring is pulled from the center of the coil, resulting in excellent load stability. However, a disadvantage is that stress (load) concentrates at the pinched part. The round hook, on the other hand, is raised without being pinched, which helps reduce stress concentration. Additionally, based on experience, its load stability is comparable to that of the reverse round hook. (For more information about the round hook, please refer to the related links.) There are various other hook shapes as well, including U hooks, half-round hooks, and side round hooks. If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Free membership registrationThe hooks of tension springs are typically formed by raising one coil at each end of the spring. When a load is applied to the tension spring, stress (load) tends to concentrate at the base and inside of this hook, so issues such as breakage or deformation mostly occur starting from the hook. The spring equipped with a plate hook, as shown in the photo, covers this "weakness" of tension springs. Although it incurs additional costs for manufacturing the separate plate, it can reduce stress concentration on the hook, making it a hook shape that is resistant to breakage and deformation. This hook shape is referred to as a "screw-in hook" in JIS standards. Additionally, the "tapered round hook," which incorporates a round wire hook inside the spring, is also a hook shape that is strong against breakage and deformation. (For more information about the tapered round hook, please refer to the related links below.) If you are experiencing issues with spring troubles such as breakage or deformation, please feel free to consult us. If you send us broken samples, we will propose improvement measures. Free membership registrationThe typical type is a closed end, where the tip of the coil at the end is in contact with the next coil. This single turn at the end is called a "seat coil" (zamaki). The seat coil serves to improve the stability of the spring when it is upright, but it does not have any functional role as a spring. The turns that function as a spring are those excluding the seat coil, and the number of turns that effectively function as a spring is referred to as the effective number of turns. The spring in the photo is an atypical "open end." The tip of the coil at the end is not in contact with the next coil, creating a gap (indicated by the arrow). The seat coils at both ends are less than one turn, resulting in fewer seat coils compared to a closed end. The reason for deliberately adopting a non-typical open end is mainly in the following cases: 1) When you do not want to change the spring constant (want to keep the effective number of turns fixed), and 2) When you want to keep the height at which the spring is in contact low (want to reduce the total number of turns). While reducing the seat coils may worsen the stability of the spring, it allows you to maintain the spring constant while keeping the contact height low.

Free membership registrationTo obtain a nonlinear spring constant, a coil spring with an uneven pitch, like the one in the photo, is effective. When deflection is applied to this spring, the narrower pitch section on the right side first makes contact. As a result, the apparent effective number of coils in the entire spring decreases, increasing the spring constant and significantly raising the load. The spring constant takes on a shape similar to a broken line graph. Springs with a nonlinear spring constant include not only uneven pitch springs but also conical springs. The spring constant of these springs gradually increases with increasing deflection, resulting in a curved shape. If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Free membership registrationThe hook that looks like a photo is called a "drawn round hook." It has a hook integrated into the body, making it resistant to issues such as breakage and deformation. The hook and body are manufactured separately, and typically, a thicker wire diameter for the hook is chosen compared to the body. Free membership registrationMaterial: Phosphor bronze wire, C5191W Wire diameter: Φ1.4 Springs are sometimes required to have properties such as non-magnetism, electrical conductivity, and corrosion resistance. It is often difficult to satisfy these properties with iron-based or stainless steel spring materials, so copper alloys are chosen. The most commonly used material for coil springs is "phosphor bronze wire." Phosphor bronze wire exhibits "springiness" only after heat treatment, so it must undergo heat treatment after forming. The heat treatment temperature is around 250 degrees and is referred to as low-temperature annealing. (For more information on phosphor bronze wire, please refer to the related links.) Free membership registrationThis product is used as an antenna rather than as a so-called spring. The material used is "hard steel wire, SW-C." A representative of iron-based spring materials is piano wire. Piano wire is used for springs that require severe durability, such as clutch springs and brake springs. Hard steel wire has lower durability compared to piano wire, but it is a cost-effective material with good workability. It is mainly used for springs under static loads, as well as for fittings and wire forming products. (For static loads, please refer to the related links.) Free membership registrationWhen processing spring materials, residual stress occurs within the material. If this residual stress is left untreated, the spring will attempt to return to its original shape, resulting in deformation over time. To avoid this phenomenon (springback), stress relief heat treatment is always performed after spring forming. Higher heat treatment temperatures are more effective at removing residual stress. However, spring materials have the characteristic that their strength decreases sharply when exposed to temperatures exceeding 450 degrees Celsius. Therefore, the stress relief heat treatment for springs is conducted at relatively low temperatures ranging from 200 to 450 degrees Celsius. This heat treatment is referred to as "low-temperature annealing." (In our spring manufacturing field, we call it tempering.) Materials such as piano wire, which are iron-based, develop a layer of iron oxide on the surface due to low-temperature annealing, and the color changes from brown to deep blue (as shown in the photo) as the heat treatment temperature increases. Because of this blue coloration, low-temperature annealing is sometimes referred to as bluing treatment. However, in the case of stainless steel, there is not much color change even after heat treatment, so the term "bluing" does not seem appropriate as a description for heat treatment of springs in general.

Free membership registration◎ Static Load The following cases apply: 1) During the use of the spring, there is no fluctuation in load (a constant load is applied). 2) There is fluctuation in load, but the number of repetitions is approximately 1,000 times or less over its lifetime. ◎ Dynamic Load Also referred to as repeated load, most springs fall into this category. The methods for evaluating the durability of springs also differ for each case. In the case of static load, the evaluation criterion is whether the material undergoes plastic deformation. The idea is that it is acceptable as long as there is no "settling" in the spring. For dynamic load, it is natural that there is no settling, and the evaluation is based on how many cycles the spring can endure before fatigue failure occurs. By the way, enduring 10 million cycles is considered equivalent to having a semi-permanent durability. The "fatigue" of metals refers to the progression of micro-cracks due to repeated loading. Typically, it does not involve plastic deformation, making it a very troublesome phenomenon that can lead to sudden failure without any prior signs of settling or deformation. This concludes a rough explanation of static and dynamic loads and their evaluation methods. If you have any points that were insufficiently explained or any questions, please feel free to contact us by phone or email.

Free membership registrationThis is a space-saving spring used to secure work in narrow gaps. It is formed flat in a wave shape rather than in a coil shape. The material used is "spring stainless steel wire SUS316-WPA," which has better corrosion resistance than "SUS304-WPB" and is commonly used for springs in food factories and chemical plants. After spring forming, heat treatment (low-temperature annealing) is applied to relieve stress. Springs of the same shape have been processed using "piano wire (SWP-A, SWP-B)," "hard steel wire (SW-C)," and "phosphor bronze wire (C5191W)." If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Tsurugaoka Spring Co., Ltd. Contact: Ujiie Phone: 0235-22-0407 FAX: 0235-22-0546 Email: web@tohj.com We also support web meetings.

Free membership registrationThis is a spring used for the protection of cables and similar items. It is used by passing cables or hoses through the inner diameter of the spring. Unlike pipes, it allows for a certain degree of bending and flexing while protecting the cables inside. Some of the longer ones exceed a total length of 4 meters. The material used is "spring stainless steel wire - SUS304-WPB." There are also proven results with "piano wire" and "beryllium copper wire" for springs of the same shape. If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Our technical staff will respond carefully. Tsurugaoka Spring Co., Ltd. Free membership registrationThe material used is "hard steel wire SW-C." Compared to piano wire, hard steel wire has lower durability but offers good workability and is a cost-effective material. It is used in various fields such as safety pins, cushions for sheets and beds, and shutter winding springs. For applications that do not require strict durability, it can provide cost advantages compared to piano wire. This spring is designed to allow hoses or cables to pass through the inner diameter side for protection. Since it uses spring material, it can bend to some extent, functioning like a flexible pipe. The surface treatment is "electroless nickel plating." If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Our technical staff will respond carefully. Tsuruoka Spring Co., Ltd. Free membership registrationThis is a ring with protrusions for stopping and positioning. It utilizes spring properties and is used as a retaining ring. Since flatness when placed on a reference plate is important (to prevent rattling), we guarantee quality through a full inspection using dedicated jigs. The material used is "spring stainless steel wire, SUS304-WPB." Similar rings and retaining rings have been successfully made with "piano wire" and "hard steel wire." If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Our technical staff will respond carefully. Tsurugaoka Spring Co., Ltd. Free membership registrationIt may look like just a ring, but in fact, it is constructed by twisting the ends of a thin spring that is tightly coiled, joining them together to form a complete loop. During the twisting process, care is taken to ensure that no twisting occurs throughout the entire ring. The entire ring can stretch and contract like a rubber band, making it useful as a reinforcing spring for the sealing part. The material used is "spring stainless steel wire, SUS631-WPC." This stainless steel spring material is used when greater strength and heat resistance are required compared to the general-purpose "SUS304-WPB." To achieve the specified strength, a heat treatment known as precipitation hardening (also called aging treatment) is applied after the spring is formed. For springs of the same shape, there are processing achievements using non-magnetic and corrosion-resistant "SUS316-WPA" and iron-based spring materials such as "piano wire" and "hard steel wire." If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us. Our technical staff will respond carefully. Tsuruoka Spring Co., Ltd. Free membership registrationMost of the "spring stainless steel wire" has a nickel plating on its surface. The purpose of the nickel plating is to improve the sliding of the material and enhance the workability of spring processing (especially coiling processing). In fact, when coiling is done using "bare wire" without nickel plating, the material tends to stick to the mold, making the process unsuccessful. However, since "bare wire" has better corrosion resistance, there may be cases where its use is essential depending on the customer's application. The spring (part of it shown in the photo) was coiled using SUS304-WPB, and then the plating was removed. This allows for both workability (cost) and corrosion resistance to be satisfied. By performing barrel polishing as a finishing touch, a gloss like that in the photo can also be achieved. If you have any issues with springs or wire forming, please feel free to consult us. Free membership registrationThe material used is "Piano Wire Type A - SWP-A," with a wire diameter of Φ2.9. The shape of the hook is a "U hook." Along with reverse round hooks and round hooks, it is a commonly used hook shape; however, the bending radius at the upright part tends to concentrate load (stress), so it is shaped with as large a bending radius as possible. The surface treatment is trivalent chrome plating + baking (dehydrogenation treatment). If you have any issues with springs, please feel free to consult us.
