The material for molds, "Beryllium Copper," is a high-strength copper alloy with excellent thermal conductivity and superior wear resistance. Even in the molding of engineering plastics (engineering plastics) that require long cooling times, the high thermal conductivity enables a reduction in cycle time. Additionally, the common issue of poor cooling balance in large molds can be addressed, as it can be cooled without temperature variation, making deformation during molding less likely and leading to a reduction in defect rates. Our company, in collaboration with Okuma Corporation and NGK Insulators, has developed a technology to create high-hardness tool steel "SKD61" using metal additive manufacturing with "beryllium copper." ~Development Background~ In recent years, the use of engineering plastics has accelerated, many of which contain glass fibers, leading to accelerated wear of molds. If the mold has low durability, frequent mold changes and maintenance are necessary, resulting in high running costs and reduced mold operating rates. NGK Fine Mold offers the 'DG Coat' and the new 'TG Coat', which are hard coatings used for beryllium copper materials. When molding engineering plastics, the material contains glass, which can cause the coating on the mold surface to peel off and the base material to wear more easily.
