Large-scale blast room, one of the largest in the Chugoku region of Japan.

It is equipped with a large blast facility measuring 6 meters in width, 3 meters in height, and 10 meters in depth. This is installed in a dedicated room.

Harada Iron Works has two blast rooms suitable for photo sizes. Both are manual, allowing operators to hold the nozzle and perform blasting operations. This enables processing of the interiors of tanks and piping, as well as complexly shaped fabricated products. Additionally, the blast rooms have doors at both the front and back, allowing for the processing of items over 10 meters in length. This blasting equipment is all manufactured in-house by Harada Iron Works and is designed to be in optimal condition for surface preparation before painting.

The painting done by our company has resulted in the product being finished remarkably beautifully.

Our products feature beautiful finishes. The painted surfaces shine like mirrors, even when viewed up close.

This product is exposed to wind, rain, and ultraviolet rays on the outside, and water flows inside, so painting is necessary. First, a type of shot blasting was used for surface preparation to remove dirt and uneven areas. After that, three layers of paint were applied. Since the painting specifications differ between the exterior and interior of this product, masking is done to prevent paint from getting on the inner surface before painting. The outer diameter is approximately φ3000, and the weight is about 5 tons. For the exterior painting specifications, a two-component polyamide amine cured modified epoxy resin is used for the primer, the same type of resin for the intermediate coat, and a two-component polyamide amine cured modified epoxy resin enamel for the top coat, resulting in a total film thickness of 120 μm. This product is finished without defects such as drips, painting flaws, or insufficient film thickness.

Coating defects carry risks that can occur at various stages of the coating process. Here are the typical causes of issues and the corresponding countermeasures.

"Approaches to Improving Coating Quality" The causes of defects and troubles that occur in the coating process can be classified into five categories: 1. Defects due to the condition of the substrate 2. Defects due to the quality of paint or solvents 3. Defects in coating equipment or facilities 4. Defects in application methods or conditions 5. Defects due to the application environment These issues can be avoided through proactive measures. However, defects caused by the application environment may require capital investment or process changes. Nevertheless, by adjusting processes according to weather conditions and managing delivery schedules, troubles can be avoided. When coating defects occur, the corrosion resistance and appearance of the product are diminished, necessitating corrections through sanding or stripping the coating. This is a labor-intensive and time-consuming task that also incurs costs. Therefore, it is essential to address the causes in advance to improve coating quality.

All costs associated with manufacturing and construction are referred to as "lifecycle costs." This includes initial costs, running costs, repair costs, management fees, and demolition costs.

The breakdown of life cycle costs consists of six components: construction costs, operating costs, utility costs, repair costs, management costs, and disposal costs. Construction costs include planning and design costs, material costs, manufacturing costs, transportation costs, and on-site construction costs. On the other hand, operating costs include security costs, cleaning costs, and maintenance and inspection costs. Utility costs encompass expenses for water supply and sewage, gas, electricity, and so on. Repair costs require expenses for regular maintenance, equipment and parts replacement, and repairs. Management costs include operating costs, taxes, and insurance costs. Finally, disposal costs involve expenses related to demolition. Initial costs account for about 20-25% of the total for many structures and products, which is surprisingly low. However, the composition of running costs can vary significantly depending on the use, and renovation and repair costs may exceed construction costs. Large structures, such as bridges, were built in large numbers during the period of rapid economic growth, but they are now aging. Since it is not realistic to replace all buildings with new ones, appropriate renovation and repair work is crucial. To ensure safe use over a long period, it is necessary to properly understand and manage life cycle costs.

Rather than elements such as excellent equipment or high-performance paints, proper surface preparation is the most important factor. Surface preparation is the process of preparing the surface to be suitable for painting, which includes cleaning, removing impurities, and roughening or smoothing the surface. Surface preparation greatly affects the lifespan of the paint, with the proportion of substrate adjustment reaching as high as 49.5%. There are three benefits to surface preparation: removing impurities, improving adhesion, and achieving a beautiful finish. In painting work, meticulous surface preparation is carried out to prevent painting defects.

Primer required, prevents peeling.

If you apply topcoat paint without a primer, it will peel off. Compared to products that have both a primer and a topcoat, those without a primer have weaker adhesion to the substrate, making the paint film more prone to peeling.

When comparing products that only have a topcoat without a primer to standard painting products that include a primer, it was found that the products without a primer easily had their paint film peel off. Primer paint has the dual effect of preventing rust and strongly adhering to the substrate and underlayer, making it indispensable. Although the primer is not visible, it plays an important role in maintaining corrosion resistance. Additionally, if the primer is not applied properly, the topcoat may be unevenly applied or have inconsistencies, resulting in an unattractive finish. Furthermore, the primer enhances the permeability of the paint, allowing the topcoat to adhere better, which can improve the durability and anti-corrosive properties of the paint film. In other words, the primer is a crucial step that significantly affects not only the appearance but also the performance and lifespan of the paint. Therefore, skipping the primer can lead to a higher likelihood of peeling paint and rust-prone products, making it essential to always apply the appropriate primer.

Causes of coating delamination

I will explain the reasons why the coating peels off.

We compared samples with and without a primer. For surface preparation, we degreased with cleaning thinner and roughened the surface with sandpaper. The painting specifications used epoxy-modified resin paint for the primer and acrylic-modified phthalic resin paint for the topcoat. After allowing sufficient drying time, tests were conducted. When removing the masking tape, the sample without primer had the paint peel off with it. The primer has a high adhesion to the substrate, and when used together with the topcoat, it maximizes the performance of the paint. Skipping the primer may result in a visually appealing finish, but the performance of the paint is compromised. By performing blast processing, a more robust paint film can be formed. Omitting the primer reduces the adhesion of the paint, making it more prone to peeling and crumbling. The combination of primer and topcoat allows the paint to adhere to the surface, enhancing the strength and durability of the paint film. The primer is an essential step to maximize the performance of the paint and ensure quality. While it is possible to shorten the process by omitting it, this will impact the durability and quality of the paint job.

Rubber roll deterioration replacement

The deteriorated lining of rubber or resin attached to the metal can be easily peeled off.

Lining products that are often discarded or left unused. However, when used for a long time, the rubber, resin, and plating on the surface can deteriorate and rust. It is also difficult to reline them, and a clean stripping through blasting treatment is necessary. Harada Iron Works' blasting creates a fine uneven surface, improving adhesion and transforming the product into one that lasts longer. Compared to making new similar products, it can be done overwhelmingly 'faster' and 'cheaper.' Harada Iron Works has its own grit blast and sand blast equipment. This blasting process is suitable for products that have the option of being discarded or reused. For example, it is effective not only for the reuse of rubber linings but also for surface treatment of steel materials, machine parts, ships, tanks, and more. Castings made by melting metal and pouring it into molds tend to have burrs and residues from the mold material, which are removed through blasting treatment. Please leave the repair and maintenance of old products to Harada Ironworks.

What you requested from us is an in-house jig. Unfortunately, the product had been used for many years, resulting in peeling paint and advancing rust. This jig is old, and there are no existing drawings, so new production would require time and budget. Therefore, we only performed modifications and repairs on the necessary parts, along with repainting. First, we removed the paint and rust using blasting (type 1 surface preparation) and conducted surface treatment. After that, we applied a primer and topcoat, completing the product. This product measures 1500×1500 L=2500, and we used grid blasting and surface preparation according to SSPC SP-10. Additionally, we applied one coat of epoxy-modified alkyd resin primer and one coat of synthetic resin blended paint for the topcoat. The repair and modification took only 4 days. It took a bit longer due to the need to differentiate the painting of the main frame and the handrails and ladder, but we were able to accommodate the short delivery time. One option for removing rubber: Type 1 scraping!!

We will use 18 rubber rolls of φ220×5,500, removing the rubber with a blast to achieve a beautiful finish.

The rolls have aged, and the rubber has worn out and become unusable. In addition to the rubber, there are also issues like rust, so first, we will cleanly strip the rubber using a blast, and then we will reapply the rubber. It's pleasing to see the product beautifully revived! Please note that our company cannot handle rubber application work. Since the process of removing the rubber takes time, we will first strip the rubber from the rubber rolls using grit blasting after they arrive. Then, just before shipping, we will completely remove the rust with sandblasting and prepare for shipment. By removing the rubber and rust and reapplying the rubber, the product will be in like-new condition. Furthermore, the blasting creates a rough surface, which increases the surface area, improves the adhesion of the rubber, and enhances the durability of the product. Remove rust from iron with ISO Sa2.5 standard surface preparation!

To overcome accumulated rust, it is possible to restore a remarkable shine even when conventional tools are ineffective, using a type of blast treatment.

This plate is quite corroded and covered in rust. However, all the rust can be completely removed through blasting treatment. Normally, when rust occurs, it is common to use sandpaper, disc sanders, or power brushes to scrub it off. However, if the corrosion is extensive or deep, it may not be completely removed. In such cases, blasting treatment can completely eliminate the rust. For base materials with advanced rust, it is necessary to perform rust prevention treatment immediately after surface preparation through blasting. Even a short period of 1 to 2 hours without rust prevention treatment can lead to further rust progression and darkening of the surface, so caution is required. The "lifespan of the paint" on metal products, or rather the "lifespan of the product," is greatly influenced by the preparation of the base material! No matter how high-quality the paint used or how advanced the application techniques are, the thoroughness of the cleaning of the base material before painting has a significant impact.

SS400 outer tank painting

The SS400 outdoor tank was blast-treated and then spray-painted.

The interior is untreated, and only the exterior has been painted. The tank is large, with dimensions of 2500mm in diameter and 4400mm in height. The specifications include painting after blast treatment, with a salt-resistant coating. First, impurities and rust on the surface were removed by blasting, and then a total of six layers of paint were applied, including inorganic zinc, thick-film epoxy resin, and urethane resin. Although not shown in the photos, the handrails and stairs were also painted, with the top coat being yellow. Even with such a large tank, painting was carried out without issues due to the number of overhead cranes and the spacious painting area. The delivery time was a bit short at just over a week, but by using cranes for the painting, we were able to reduce the labor involved in flipping the tank and managed to meet the scheduled delivery date. A comparison of the "sandblast" and "grit blast" processes before and after on the test piece was conducted.

Our company owns a manual blast facility with dimensions of 6m in width, 10m in depth, and 3m in height, which can accommodate the processing of complex fabricated products. This facility can be applied to various purposes, including surface preparation before anti-corrosion treatment, paint stripping for maintenance items, removal of oxide films after heat treatment, and improving adhesion through increased surface area. We used SS400 products as test pieces and verified the results by changing only the abrasive material while using the same equipment and air pressure. We carefully carry out surface treatment (blasting) to inorganic zinc coating on large frames.

This time, we will apply blast treatment and inorganic zinc coating to a frame measuring 10m in length and 2m in width. After blasting a massive pipe weighing 2 tons and measuring 5 meters in length, we will perform underwater painting. A minimum film thickness of 300μm is required for the underwater painting. SGP Piping Painting (Part 2) - Masking the Gasket Seat, Blasting, and Heat-Resistant Coating - Efficiently handling a large volume of gas pipes.

In the first part, we introduced the preparation work and blasting, but now we will move on to the painting work. This time, we used a thick film type paint that excels in heat resistance. This paint achieves a film thickness of 100 to 200 μm with a single spray, and the maximum heat resistance temperature is 600°C! The weather resistance due to the thickness of the paint film is also excellent. However, this paint is prone to clogging, so we used the Turn Double Chip from Seiwa Sangyo Co., Ltd. By using this chip, we can reduce paint clogging. There are methods to increase the dilution ratio or to use a larger chip diameter, but the reasons for choosing this chip are as follows. Increasing the dilution ratio would result in a thinner film thickness, and increasing the chip diameter would lead to more paint loss. Therefore, following the recommended values from the paint manufacturer, using this chip became the optimal choice. The construction period was 5 working days. The preparation work took 2 to 3 days, and blasting and painting took 2 days.
