Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) surge arresters operate as voltage-dependent switches. When a voltage exceeding the rated DC breakdown voltage is applied across the device, the gas inside the GDT begins to ionize and discharges until it reaches the impulse discharge initiation voltage.
