[Seminar] The Future of Japan's Energy and Decarbonization Policies and Their Impact on the Asian Economy
[Speaker]
Daishi Sugiyama, Chief Researcher, Canon Institute for Global Studies
[Key Lecture Content]
The war in Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz are causing one of the largest energy crises in post-war Japan and Asia. Japan relies heavily on the Middle East for most of its oil, much of which passes through this strait, making the impact of supply disruptions extremely significant. In this lecture, we will analyze the future of resource supply based on different war scenarios and examine the repercussions on the oil, LNG, and coal markets as well as the Asian economy. Furthermore, after reviewing data on climate change and decarbonization policies, we will clarify the issues in Japan's energy policy, which has prioritized decarbonization, and state that a realistic policy shift centered on energy security is urgently needed, including diversification of supply sources, the restart of nuclear power, and the utilization of coal.
