With the rapid spread of AI technologies, including generative AI, data centers are becoming a factor pushing up electricity demand in Japan. To advance the social implementation of AI under power constraints, it is necessary to consider the increase in computational demand and the improvement of power efficiency as a unified issue.
In this lecture, we will take a broad view of the impact on Japan's electricity supply and demand based on future scenarios for AI demand and the advancements in semiconductor and data center technologies that support it. Furthermore, we will organize the power-related effects, latest technological trends, and implementation challenges of photonic-electronic convergence technology, which is expected to be a promising technology for next-generation data centers, and explain the prospects for realizing a sustainable AI society.
