[Seminar] How AI Data Centers are Changing the Reform of the U.S. Power System
[Speaker]
Director of the Energy Policy Research Institute, Mr. Kimio Yamba
[Key Lecture Content]
Against the backdrop of the rapid spread of generative AI, investment in data centers (DC) is expanding in the United States, while securing electricity has become a significant constraint affecting the realization of business operations. The demand characteristics of large-scale, centralized, and 24/7 operations are forcing a transformation of the traditional supply-driven power system. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Regional Transmission Organizations (RTO) are advancing institutional reforms related to system connections, transmission planning, securing supply capacity, and cost allocation.
In this lecture, we will analyze specific investment projects in the U.S. and reforms in major RTOs, considering their impact on power procurement and business risks. Furthermore, looking ahead to the expansion of DC demand in Japan, we will explore the ideal form of a power system that integrates power sources, grids, batteries, and demand control, as well as implications for domestic systems and businesses.
