[Case Study] Large Wave Channel and Tsunami Tank for Tsunami Simulation

Research at the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory (HWRL) of Oregon State University's College of Engineering, under the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Tsunami Research Facility (NEES TRF), influences how people interact with the ocean, including where they live, how coastal ecosystems are maintained, and how energy is generated. Over the past 40 years, MTS and HWRL/NEES TRF have worked on expanding several research facilities, with MTS playing a crucial role in the expansion of each facility, from equipment planning to hardware and software specifications, system integration, and ongoing maintenance. As NEES TRF continues to improve the scale and sophistication of testing facilities, engineers around the world can gain unprecedented insights into wave dynamics and assess the potential impacts of marine events on humans, which also aids in developing more resilient structures and more effective evacuation plans.
