Sharpen the pencil only on the wooden part, exposing the core by 5 to 6 mm. Set the pencil in the testing device, applying a load of 750g ± 10g on the tip of the pencil core while maintaining an angle of 45° ± 1°. Push at a speed of 0.5 to 1 mm/s for a distance of at least 7 mm. Wipe the pencil core powder from the coating surface with a soft cloth or cotton wool and an inert solvent, and check for scratches or indentations. The hardness of the coating is determined by the soft pencil just before the one that left a scratch (the hardest pencil that did not leave a scratch).
