Phase transformation of steel The phase transformation of steel is highly path-dependent, and the effects of initial processing steps are reflected in the subsequent phase composition. When measured with the DIL805A rapid cooling type thermal expansion measurement device, the transfer between phases in steel is particularly evident, and the temperature at which this occurs is important for constructing TTT and CCT diagrams. In this example, the sample is initially heated above the austenite temperature and then rapidly cooled. This plot shows the start (Ar3) and end (Ar1) of the phase transformation from austenite to ferrite.
