A "sheath thermocouple" is a thermocouple wire housed inside a thin metal tube (sheath), filled with high-purity inorganic insulating powder (magnesium oxide/MgO) for insulation, and further processed to reduce the outer diameter. This design maintains insulation while also sealing the wire to prevent corrosion and degradation of the thermocouple due to air or high-temperature gases. Since the space between the thermocouple wire and the metal sheath is filled with MgO, it has a unified structure, resulting in a faster response time compared to protective tube-type thermocouples.
