The equilateral triangle prism functions as a dispersive prism that separates white light (parallel light) into the spectrum of a rainbow. It forms a bright spectrum with less stray light compared to diffraction gratings and does not generate secondary spectra. It uses N-SF11 flint glass as the substrate, which has a lower Abbe number and higher chromatic dispersion compared to crown glass represented by N-BK7.
