[Case Study] Incident of "Black Foreign Substance" Dispersing from Unit Cooler

The scattered foreign substances were subjected to elemental analysis using a "scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX)." As a result, the main constituent elements were found to be carbon, oxygen, and calcium. Elemental analysis was also conducted on the EPDM used in the unit cooler that was brought back, and the same elements were detected with similar component ratios, leading to the inference that they are the same substance. Next, an analysis of organic materials was performed using "Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy," and the spectra of the scattered foreign substances were found to be very similar to those of the comparison samples. Furthermore, a comparison of the surface and cross-section of the foreign substances revealed the same peak for calcium carbonate detected by SEM-EDX from the surface, while characteristic peaks of EPDM were obtained from the cross-section. Carbon compounds can undergo carbonization due to heat or aging, which may alter the spectrum from its original state, so observing the internal condition by cutting it open is crucial. From the above facts, the conclusion was reached that "the scattered black foreign substances are EPDM from the unit cooler that has deteriorated over time." As a result, the customer replaced the parts using EPDM, and thereafter, the scattering of foreign substances ceased, successfully resolving the issue.
