The new REACH regulation Annex XVII of REACH will come into effect on July 4, 2020. The new law imposes certain restrictions on the amount of PFOA, its salts, and PFOA-related substances that can be contained in materials. PFOA is often a byproduct in the manufacture of fluoropolymer materials like PTFE, and some PTFE used as internal lubricants are suspected not to comply with the limits set by the new standard (<25 ppb). SABIC is working to comply with the new regulations through PTFE lubricant formulation compounds. Meanwhile, alternative different internal lubricant packages are also available. Traditional solid lubricant packages like graphite and MoS2 ("moly") can improve wear and reduce friction, but they are fundamentally black in color. Silicone oil is also an effective wear additive, but its use may generally be restricted in painting applications or near electronic devices.
