A test cylinder adhered to the coating is pulled using hydraulic pressure, allowing for a mechanically stable measurement of the adhesion strength between the substrate and the coating.
The coating adhesion strength tester, known as the adhesion tester, is a testing machine used to measure the adhesion strength (bonding ability) between the coating and the substrate. According to JIS standards, "the cross-cut test should not be considered a means of measuring adhesion." The cross-cut test involves making cuts through the coating down to the substrate with a cutter, applying tape, and evaluating the coating's resistance to detachment from the substrate by pulling off the tape, with the results being a pass or fail determined by the visual inspection of the tester. The adhesion tester can pull a test cylinder adhered to the coating and quantitatively measure the tension required for adhesive failure between the coating and the substrate, allowing for the measurement of adhesion strength between them. Additionally, by conducting this test daily, trends toward defects can be identified from changes in adhesion strength values. It accommodates various sizes of dollies, and the rate of tension increase and test duration can be set via a touch panel. It is equipped with a rechargeable battery, making it portable for testing at painting sites.

basic information
Apply adhesive evenly to the surface of the newly cleaned test cylinder (dolly). Bond the adhesive-coated surface of the test cylinder until the adhesive cures. After the adhesive has cured, carefully cut around the test cylinder down to the substrate using a dolly cutter. Clamp the test cylinder (dolly) at the pulling part of the adhesion tester. Start the adhesion tester and apply tension, ensuring that the specimen breaks within 90 seconds at a tension increase rate not exceeding 1 MPa/s, and record the tension at which the specimen breaks. The tension increase rate, upper limit of tension increase, and duration of holding the upper tension limit can be set arbitrarily.
