Hot Melt Extrusion (HME) is a method that uses heat and pressure to melt polymers and extrude them into molds in a continuous process. HME is widely applied in the plastics industry and has recently been used in pharmaceutical formulations and drug delivery systems. The HME process is used to mix active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with polymers and other excipients at high temperatures and pressures. The extruded material can be cut or crushed into micro-pellets for filling into capsules or compressing into tablets.
