■What is Nitriding? Nitriding is a general term for a method of hardening the surface of steel by allowing nitrogen to permeate it. It is characterized by minimal dimensional changes due to heat treatment and low-temperature processing, resulting in less distortion and deformation. By performing nitriding, a nitrogen-containing nitrided layer is formed, which has excellent wear resistance and is said to possess several times the strength compared to a carburized layer. Among the various nitriding methods, plasma ion nitriding uses gases that consider environmental impact, making it a processing technique with minimal safety and environmental effects, thus being friendly to the Earth's environment.

■Benefits of Nitriding Treatment ● Low Distortion Due to the low treatment temperature of 450–550°C, it is optimal for precision parts. Among these, plasma ion nitriding is performed in a vacuum, resulting in a surface that is free from oxidation after treatment, and a reduction in surface roughness is also rare. ● Wear Resistance The nitrogen-containing nitrided layer is said to have wear resistance that is 6 to 10 times stronger than carburized layers. By adjusting the gas ratios of hydrogen, nitrogen, and mixed gases, the composition of the chemical layer can be freely tailored, allowing for mechanical properties suited to specific purposes. ● Corrosion Resistance The nitrided layer exhibits excellent corrosion resistance. ● Treatment Time Plasma ion nitriding utilizes the sputtering effect of ionized gas, significantly reducing treatment time compared to conventional nitriding processes.
