Sodium and potassium are also electrolytes that conduct electricity, but they are not included in the calculation of hardness. ■Why are hardness and electrical conductivity correlated? The higher the hardness, the greater the total amount of dissolved ions in the water. Since electrical conductivity increases in proportion to the amount of ions, water with higher hardness also has higher electrical conductivity.
