A course that not only focuses on calculation-centered exercises like those learned in school but also provides hints for improving problem-solving skills for technical issues that engineers are likely to encounter in their work.
This seminar is a comprehensive review of the fundamental knowledge of mechanics of materials, incorporating exercises to learn the necessary concepts for stress and strength calculations. First, we will confirm the significance of studying mechanics of materials using the historical case of the Comet aircraft's series of crashes, and explain the units required for calculations. Next, we will learn about shear forces, strain-stress diagrams, the relationship between stress and strain, and deepen our understanding of the relationship between torsional torque and angle of twist, as well as the torsional shear forces acting on round bars and cylinders. Furthermore, we will cover the forces acting on beams, equilibrium of forces, action and reaction forces, internal forces in beams, shear force diagrams (SFD), bending moment diagrams (BMD), stress and strain, and deflection. Each topic will include exercises to confirm calculation methods. Finally, we will analyze the series of crashes of the Comet aircraft based on the knowledge of mechanics of materials learned, and explore its application to technical problems. *For more details, please check the related links or the seminar details in the catalog.*
