■Infrared Spectroscopy The most commonly used region is the mid-infrared range (2.5–25 μm), where the absorption spectrum in this range arises from vibrations that involve changes in the dipole moment among molecular vibrations, which is why it is also referred to as the vibrational spectrum. When infrared radiation is irradiated onto a molecule, if the vibrational period of the infrared radiation matches the vibrational period of the atoms, each individual atom or atomic group absorbs energy according to its respective period, causing the vibration to transition from the ground state to the excited state. This absorption manifests as absorption in the infrared spectrum. Atoms have unique vibrations corresponding to the molecular structure, so by analyzing the spectrum, insights into the molecular structure can be obtained. ■What is FT-IR? FT-IR is a method that does not irradiate infrared radiation onto the sample by changing the wavelength, but rather irradiates continuous light onto the sample and obtains the absorption spectrum corresponding to the molecular structure by performing a Fourier transform on the interference pattern, thereby obtaining information about the atomic groups (functional groups) in the substance. Since it can simultaneously measure incident light across the entire frequency range using continuous light, it allows for high-sensitivity measurements in a short time.
