As electronic devices are increasingly used in various everyday locations, ensuring the reliability of products has become important. Since it is possible for the copper used in the wiring of printed circuit boards to migrate and cause defects in high temperature and high humidity environments, it is crucial to evaluate the components that promote migration. This case study introduces an example of quantitative analysis of cation components eluted from printed circuit boards using ion chromatography (IC). Thus, IC is an effective method for evaluating the corrosion components on the surface of solid samples.

[Analysis Case] Evaluation of Gas in Lithium-Ion Secondary Batteries

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of gas components in batteries.

The electrolyte of lithium-ion secondary batteries is known to decompose and gasify due to repeated charging and discharging. By using GC-TCD and GC/MS, the decomposed gas components can be detected with high sensitivity. GC-TCD can analyze the composition ratios of eight components (H2, O2, N2, CO, CH4, CO2, C2H4, C2H6), while GC/MS can qualitatively analyze various decomposition products. We also support gas analysis in not only laminate-type cells but also coin-type and prismatic cells, as well as cells using ionic liquids.

IGC Inverse Gas Chromatography

The diversifying powder technology, particularly solid pharmaceutical raw materials, is pressing the need for a wide range of high-precision chemical property measurement techniques regarding components and structures. The IGC inverse gas chromatography has been developed as a surface property measurement technique using gas for the study of surface properties of fine particles, thin films, and fiber materials. SEA measures the physicochemical properties of pharmaceutical materials, specifically the surface free energy of powders and acidic/basic parameters, which are crucial factors affecting many substances' products and manufacturing processes, with high sensitivity that was previously impossible with conventional methods. SEA has been developed as a practical device through collaborative research with pharmaceutical research institutions and companies, based on techniques that some researchers have traditionally spent time and effort on, and it performs sample measurements in a set humidity environment completely automatically from sample injection to data processing.
