Problem-Solving Materials: Utilizing 3D Data Part 10 | Effective Implementation of 3D Inspection

How to utilize 3D scan data to achieve effective inspection processes? A resource for discovering and solving challenges in production sites.

This document is a series that proposes solutions to various challenges faced in production sites, from identifying issues to finding resolutions. In the "3D Data Utilization" edition, we will introduce various solutions to manufacturing challenges through the use of 3D data. [Document Overview] Against the backdrop of digitalization in manufacturing, there has been an increase in products with freeform surfaces and complex shapes utilizing 3D data. Consequently, the use of 3D scanning inspection, which can evaluate shapes that traditional methods cannot adequately assess, is advancing. However, to conduct reliable inspections, it is necessary to obtain "high-quality data" while considering the nature of 3D scan data. This document will focus on the "quality of 3D scan data" and present the challenges encountered during the acquisition of 3D scan data and effective solutions. *You can download the document using the button below.

How much of the assembly item can be captured with a CT scan?

[Mitarepo] The internal structure is completely visible! We investigated how much of the assembly, which cannot be seen from the outside, can be captured with a CT scan!

"Mitarepo" is a series that introduces what can be done using various products with the concept of "I tried doing this!" We deliver useful information each time from the wide range of product genres handled by System Create. The theme of Vol. 39 is "We investigated how much of an assembly item can be captured with a CT scan!" CT scans are used in industrial fields, but it can be hard to imagine their actual applications. This time, we tried everything from CT scanning to data analysis! Using a Rubik's Cube as an example of an assembly item, we verified the following: 1) Structural confirmation: Checking how the internal structure can be captured 2) Defect analysis: Confirming the presence of voids inside plastic molded products 3) Verification with the actual item: Disassembling the workpiece to check the contents "What does a structure that can't be seen from the outside look like?" "What can be done with a product's CT scan?" We will explain the visibility and applications of CT scan data, along with verification photos and comments from technical staff. *You can download the materials from the button below.

Mitarepo [65] peel 3 How far can we capture 'deep colors and black items'?

"Can you really capture black? We tested how far we can go with the new 3D scanner 'peel 3'!" | System Create

"Mitarepo" is a series that introduces what can be done using various products with the concept of "I tried doing this!" From the wide range of product genres handled by System Create, we deliver useful information each time. In Vol. 65, we tested the newly designed 3D scanner "peel 3" to see how well it can handle dark-colored and black workpieces! During the scanning process of dark-colored and black workpieces, we implemented measures against noise, dropouts, setting changes, and spraying, and after multiple scans, have you ever experienced, "It took more time than I expected..." or "Correcting the captured data is tough..."? This time, we used the newly introduced "peel 3," which is equipped with an IR-VCSEL (infrared vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser) light source, making it stronger for dark and black colors, to verify what types of workpieces it can actually handle! In the materials, we will explain various features of dark-colored and black workpieces and the data acquisition results that vary depending on texture, along with photos and comments. *You can download the materials from the button below.

Automatically adjusts the pitch between points according to the shape! "peel 3"

Automatic resolution adjustment!? With the new feature of "peel 3," large works can be completed in a single scan! Let me explain the amazing "smart mesh function"!

Marsugo is a document that picks up the functions and features of various products and introduces the "amazing" aspects. This time, we will introduce the "Smart Mesh Function" of the handheld scanner "peel 3," which is priced affordably while offering enhanced features. In scanning tasks, the results can often be influenced by the operator's skills and experience, from settings to scanning and data post-processing. When dealing with large workpieces, it takes more time and requires more advanced tasks. However, the peel 3 is equipped with many features that allow for scanning tasks that are not affected by skill level. One of these features, the "Smart Mesh Function," automatically adjusts the resolution based on the shape! It can distinguish between wide areas and detailed parts of the workpiece, automatically adjusting the pitch for scanning different areas, merging data, and completing the shape reproduction from flat surfaces to details in a single scan without the hassle of manual adjustments! This is an amazing feature that allows for efficiency in operations without being influenced by skill level, so please take a moment to read about it. *You can download the document using the button below.

I investigated the dimensional reproducibility of the scanned data in the Mitarépo!

[Mitarepo] Investigating the dimensional reproducibility of scan data with 'COPYT3D' featuring a minimum point spacing of 0.03mm! | System Create

"Mitarepo" is a series that introduces what can be done using various products with the concept of "I tried doing this!" From the wide range of product genres handled by System Create, we deliver useful information each time. In Vol. 82, we scanned a workpiece using the stationary type 3D scanner "COPYT3D FX" and examined the dimensional reproducibility of the acquired data. The stationary type 3D scanner "COPYT3D" has made its debut!! Since the scanning field can be adjusted, it can accommodate everything from small to large items. Moreover, it is equipped with a high-resolution camera, allowing for scanning of intricate details! This raises the question... how accurately can it scan!? Therefore, this time we measured the dimensions of the scanned data to investigate its reproducibility. We prepared two types of workpieces and examined the quality of the scans for each. We explain the reproducibility and performance of the 3D scanner with images and tables based on the results. You can download the materials from the button below.

[Example] Observation of cavities (voids) occurring inside the product.

As an example of non-destructive testing, we will introduce a case of observing the condition of cavities (voids) that occur inside a product!

Generally, the measuring instruments used in reverse engineering can be broadly classified into devices that measure the outer surface and those that measure not only the outer surface but also the interior of the object. In the former category, laser scanners and digitizers are practical, while in the latter category, X-ray CT scanners have been developed. One advantage of using X-ray CT scanners is that they allow observation of the internal condition without destroying the product. Here, as an example of non-destructive testing, we will introduce a case of observing the state of cavities (voids) that occur inside a product. [Contents] ■ Overview ■ Visualization of cavities (voids) ■ Discussion *For detailed information on the case, please refer to the related links. For more information, feel free to contact us.
