Introducing a simulation of a check valve (non-return valve) as a case study in fluid analysis.

CFD allows for the shortening of product development periods, reduction of prototyping costs, and acquisition of detailed data that is difficult to measure through experiments. In this article, we will introduce application examples that can be useful for product development using Simerics' CAE/CFD software. Check valves (non-return valves) play an important role in preventing water hammer and regulating flow direction. Research and development are ongoing daily to enhance the durability of piping. However, this requires spending a lot of time and costs on prototyping and testing the valves. Even when performing CFD simulations, setting up the mesh deformation associated with the opening and closing of flow paths can be quite labor-intensive. With Simerics' CFD, high-performance template meshes are provided, and the movement and deformation of the computational mesh that occurs during calculations are fully automated, allowing anyone to easily and quickly generate meshes. We will introduce a case study based on Company D's implementation of "Cu Energy," simulating the energy-saving effects of compressors. In the case of one unit, before implementation, the annual energy consumption was 86,352 kWh over 257 days, with an annual electricity cost of 949,872 yen (11 yen/kWh). After implementation, the energy consumption was simulated to decrease by 17,476 kWh per year, resulting in a reduction of electricity costs by 192,236 yen per year. The introduction of this product is expected to lead to cost savings in chemical expenses, as well as energy savings and CO2 reduction.
