What can be understood from molecular dynamics calculations

We will introduce the target of analysis, the physical property information obtained, and examples of analysis that can be understood from molecular dynamics calculations.

In molecular dynamics simulations, the motion of particles (atoms and molecules) is simulated by applying Newton's equations of motion to individual particles, and the physical properties of the system are calculated based on statistical thermodynamics, along with evaluating the response and dynamics to external fields such as temperature and pressure. The results obtained are effective for predicting the structure and properties of materials and contribute to solving problems in research and development involving materials engineering and molecular biology.

[Analysis Case] Analysis of Functional Ingredient Concentration in Food

Evaluation case of resveratrol concentration in red wine.

Resveratrol is a type of polyphenol and a substance that has garnered attention as a natural antioxidant. Resveratrol, which is abundant in grape skins, is also present in red wine made from whole grape skins. This document presents an analytical case in which the amount of resveratrol in three types of commercially available red wine was measured and compared using the LC/MS/MS method.

[Analysis Case] Composition and Impurity Analysis of Thin Films, Bulk, and Powder Materials

Quantitative analysis of main components and metallic impurity elements in IGZO using CP-MS.

IGZO thin films, which are transparent oxide semiconductors, are being researched and developed as TFT materials for displays. IGZO is a material whose properties change based on the composition of the thin film and the amount of impurities within it, making it important to obtain information about the composition and impurities. This time, we will introduce a case where the main components and the amounts of metallic impurity elements in IGZO powder, the raw material for the thin film, were evaluated with high precision using ICP-MS. Analysis is possible not only for powders but also for bulk and thin films.

[Analysis Case] Evaluation of Resistance Values and Li Distribution in Secondary Battery Cathodes

Distribution of resistance values in the electrode cross-section, visualization of conduction paths, and comparison with ion distribution.

The charge and discharge characteristics of lithium-ion secondary batteries are influenced by electronic conductivity. I will introduce a case where the decreased conductivity of active materials, due to degradation or blockage of conduction paths, was visualized as a resistance value distribution using SSRM. By comparing the results obtained from SSRM with the elemental distribution of Li and other elements measured by TOF-SIMS, it is possible to confirm the correlation between resistance values and elemental distribution. Additionally, it is feasible to classify conductive additives and binders based on resistance values, perform statistical processing, and quantify the mixing degree for each material.

[Analysis Case] Analysis of Bacteria Using DNA Analysis

We will analyze the bacteria in the sample from DNA without isolation or culture.

Bacteria have various growth environments depending on their species, and there are many bacteria that are difficult to isolate and culture. Therefore, by extracting and analyzing DNA, which is the blueprint of life that all bacteria possess, it becomes possible to investigate the existing bacteria without isolation or culture. Here, we will introduce examples of analysis methods for sequencing bacterial DNA to infer the existing bacteria through microbiome analysis, as well as investigating bacterial numbers using real-time PCR methods.

[Analysis Case] Mechanical Property Evaluation Simulation Using Molecular Dynamics Calculations

It is possible to analyze the deformation behavior of nanomaterials in response to environmental changes (pressure and temperature).

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are lightweight and possess excellent mechanical properties (high strength and high elasticity), making them suitable for various applications and environments. In particular, the deformation behavior of CNTs is related to flexibility and energy absorption characteristics, which are important in sensor and nano-device design. This document presents a case study that simulates the bending and recovery deformation of single-walled CNTs using molecular dynamics calculations. The simulation allows for the observation of structural changes at the atomic level due to environmental changes (pressure and temperature), enabling the analysis of deformation behavior based on the changes in strain energy associated with these structural changes.

[Analysis Case] Evaluation of Molecular Permeability to Lipid Bilayers through Molecular Dynamics Calculations

Insights into the permeability of molecules can be obtained from free energy calculations!

Our organization conducts evaluations of molecular permeability to lipid bilayers using molecular dynamics simulations. The free energy obtained from molecular dynamics calculations is an important value that contributes not only to predicting the stability of the system but also to understanding the material distribution and transport phenomena in systems with spatial and temporal fluctuations. For example, it is effective in gaining insights into the permeability of molecules across biological membranes. Using lipid bilayers in aqueous solvents as an example, we will introduce a case where the permeability of molecules in the membrane was discussed based on the free energy values when benzene and carbon dioxide were transported. Introduction to Temperature Modulated DSC Method (Evaluation of Polymer Materials)

Temperature-modulated DSC allows for specific heat measurements using the IS method, providing a wealth of information in high-temperature regions where specific heat measurements have been considered difficult, which cannot be obtained with conventional DSC.

Temperature-modulated DSC provides a wealth of information that cannot be obtained with conventional DSC, enabling the following: - Distinction of thermal history, etc., through comparison of reversible and irreversible components as mentioned above. - Measurement of specific heat in high-temperature regions above around 1000°C, which is considered difficult with the JIS method. - Measurement of specific heat in low-temperature regions below room temperature. Additionally, it is expected to be useful for analyzing relaxation phenomena. In this case, as an example of that technology, we introduce "a case study evaluating PET." For more details, please refer to the PDF materials. Furthermore, in addition to DSC, our company also specializes in various thermal analyses such as TG-DTA and TMA. ● DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry): Can be used for analysis of sample melting, glass transition, thermal history, crystallization, curing, Curie point, etc., and for measuring specific heat. ● TG-DTA (Thermogravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis): Can be used for analysis of sample moisture content, ash content, decomposition, oxidation, and heat resistance evaluation. ● TMA (Thermomechanical Analysis): Can be used for measuring sample expansion rate, glass transition, softening point, etc. For more information, visit here: https://www.seiko-sfc.co.jp/analysis-service/thermal-analysis.html
