When strong energy such as ultraviolet light or heat is applied, cracks in the chemical bonds occur, generating radicals that possess only one electron. Radicals are extremely unstable and highly reactive molecular species that, once generated, react in a chain reaction, leading to the degradation of the paint film. Incidentally, the cause of the ozone hole is due to chlorine atom radicals.
